About Aquamation

Alkaline Hydrolysis: A Greener Choice

Alkaline Hydrolysis, also known as aquamation, water cremation or resomation, is an eco-friendly alternative to flame cremation and burial.

This process uses 95% water and 5% salt to dissolve human remains, returning them to their basic elements. The compounds that create life – water, carbon dioxide, minerals – emerge to be recycled in nature’s eternal cycle.

Unlike cremation, aquamation requires no fossil fuels and produces virtually no emissions. It’s considered an emissions-free method that is much gentler on our planet.

We proudly offer aquamation at Tillwell as a greener choice that is safe, affordable and sustainable. We aim to provide environmental stewardship and transparency during this difficult time, at reasonable costs. Please contact us to learn more about this meaningful alternative and our other eco-conscious services.

With aquamation, a more sustainable future starts here.

The Process Detailed

The Vessel2023-05-26T21:14:07+00:00

The body is placed in a specially designed, stainless steel vessel. This vessel ensures a controlled environment for the process, guaranteeing both respect for the deceased and the safety of the surrounding environment.

The Solution2023-05-26T21:14:25+00:00

The vessel is filled with a mixture of 95% water and 5% alkaline solution, commonly potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide. This solution is non-toxic and safe for the environment.

Heat and Time2023-06-12T17:01:18+00:00

The vessel is gently heated to approximately 150-180°C (300-356°F), and the process is carried out over a period of several hours. The warmth and alkalinity create an environment that accelerates the natural breakdown of organics, effectively returning the body to its most basic elements.

Remains2023-06-25T22:23:03+00:00

At the end of the process, only the inorganic bone fragments and a sterile liquid remain. The bone remains are rinsed, dried and can then be reduced to powder form for return to the family. The sterile liquid, rich in nutrients, is safely returned to the earth, nourishing new life and perpetuating the natural cycle of life.

B Corporation Certification

A Higher Standard

After careful review, Tillwell proudly achieved B Corp certification in 2023, making us the first certified B Corp in the Canadian funeral sector.

As a registered B Corp, we must consider our impact on all stakeholders in our decisions, including workers, customers, suppliers, the community, and the environment. With this in mind, we aim to balance purpose and profit to create real value.

Additionally, B Corps meet the highest verified standards for social and environmental performance, as well as transparency and accountability measures. Since we believe business can be a powerful force for good, we chose certification.

By becoming a B Corp, we are leading our industry in redefining success. Our charter now accounts for environmental and social factors, not just profit margins. Furthermore, we commit to complete transparency and continuous improvement.

Moreover, we pledge to donate 5% of our profits to support environmental causes in the communities we serve. With this commitment, we aim to keep innovating ethical ways to honour life’s end.

Overall, our B Corp journey demonstrates that business can operate with heart, serve society, and build a sustainable future. As members of this community leading positive change, we feel honoured. When people, the planet and profit are balanced, we can achieve great things.

Standing for Nature

Through our partnership with 1% for the Planet, Tillwell donates 1% of total annual revenue to local environmental organizations. We believe we must not only reduce impact but also take action to protect our shared home.

As 1% for the Planet members, we contribute funding toward creating a sustainable future for all. This supports strategies like combating climate change, conserving ecosystems, advancing renewable energy, and more. One percent of our revenue represents resources for driving innovation, action, and justice around key environmental issues.

Our environmental stewardship would feel incomplete without supporting these meaningful causes. We feel honoured to join 1% for the Planet by pledging 1% toward the health of our living planet and all inhabitants – now and into the future.
